GungHo Online Entertainment has released a gameplay trailer for Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, showcased at Taipei Game Show 2025. The trailer compares scenes from the original The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky with the remake's vastly improved graphics and gameplay.
While the preview focuses on turn-based combat, the remake will use the same combat system as modern Trails games, like The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak, blending real-time combat with turn-based battles. Another recent JRPG that mixed both styles was Metaphor: ReFantazio, which seamlessly transitioned from action combat to a command-based battle with the press of a button.
Trails is a story-driven RPG series that celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2024. To mark this significant milestone, the first entry in the series, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, is being wholly remade into Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter. The Kingdom of Liberl, where the story takes place, has been fully rebuilt in 3D, and all its iconic characters, including Estelle and Joshua, have been refined.
After their father's disappearance, Estelle and Joshua set off on a journey across the Kingdom of Liberl. Along the way, they will meet and part ways with new companions. The remake has refined and enhanced the combat system and given dynamic emphasis to each character's Crafts and Arts. The JRPG includes a variety of quests and numerous side activities that allow players to fully experience the feeling of traveling through the kingdom from their own perspective.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is the first series within the Trails franchise, with three titles released between 2004 and 2007. The second game was The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC, followed by The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd. The Trails series is known for maintaining a continuous narrative from its first game all the way to the most recent release, The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak II, launched in Japan in 2022 and finally arriving in the West on February 14, 2025.
Trails in the Sky the 1st Chapter is set to launch in Spring 2025 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. Clouded Leopard Entertainment will publish the game in Asia with Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Korean language options, featuring Japanese voice acting. The global release will be handled by GungHo, featuring both Japanese and English voice acting and language options in Japanese, English, French, and German.
