Tekken 8 was announced by developer Bandai Namco for PlayStation 5 during Sony's State of Play broadcast. The announcement of the fighting game was accompanied by a short video where the series' landmark characters, Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima, face off against each other with powerful moves in slow motion during a thunderstorm.
According to the game's producer Katsuhiro Harada, the scenes captured in the trailer depict the character models, backgrounds, and other assets used in-game. As such, it's not a pre-rendered movie, but what we can expect from the gameplay of Tekken 8.
Certainly, the point that most drew attention in the game's trailer was the graphics, which surpasses what was seen in Tekken 7 because of the updated hardware of the new generation consoles. The fighters have an outstanding level of detail in their faces and expressions, accompanied by iconic auras in their special moves.
The weather effects of the scenery also draw attention, with natural phenomena such as rain, flames, and tornadoes occurring in the background. You can even see the moment when water collides with the characters' clothes.
The reveal of Tekken 8 was expected by fans since a mysterious teaser was shown at the early August EVO 2022 fighting game tournament. Tekken 7 was released in 2015 for arcades and gained versions for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2017. The story brought the conclusion of the Mishima saga that has been told through all the games. Now, Jin Kazama looks to start a new arc against his father Kazuya, possibly to eradicate the demonic gene that gives both of them special powers.
And although Heihachi Mishima and other characters are canonically dead, they may appear outside the new game's story and in the arcade modes, as they do in the Tekken Tag Tournament games.
For now, Tekken 8 doesn't have a release date, but it is already confirmed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam.
