Sony U-turns and cancels its new policy for Helldivers 2

Things have taken a turn for the worse for Helldivers 2 due to Sony's requirement for Steam players to have a PSN account in order to play the cooperative multiplayer shooter developed by Arrowhead Game Studios. This decision has had very negative repercussions on the game's community which strongly reacted against the requirement with a huge wave of negative reviews on Valve's platform, a myriad of complaints on social media, and more. Things were so bad in the last few days as the requests for refunds on PC piled up and the game got over 150,000 negative reviews. Meanwhile, Arrowhead Game Studios only could watch while Sony destroyed the huge success achieved by Helldivers 2 since it was released in just a few hours. The studio tried to make Sony change its decision with apparently no success, while the biggest hit of 2024 went through the sink in a downward spiral.

The incredible pressure generated by the Helldivers 2 community is only on par with the huge disappointment generated by a decision from Sony that is hard to explain. Requesting PC players create a PSN account in order to play Helldivers 2 does not seem reasonable in any way, no matter if at some point Sony stated that it was happening. A few months have passed since the game was released and players love the gameplay experience it offers. Was it really advisable to launch a torpedo at a boat that was sailing so swiftly? Well, the events have demonstrated that it was not, and it is yet to be determined if Helldivers 2 will recover from this.

Amidst this chaos, Sony finally reacted a few hours ago and it has reversed course on its demand and it won't ask for players to have a PSN account to play Helldivers 2.

Helldivers fans -- we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.

Things are apparently back to normal in the world of Helldivers 2, but what will be the consequences of such an earthquake?
