Sony officially ends PlayStation 4 distribution in Japan

Sony has officially confirmed the discontinuation of all PlayStation 4 (PS4) models—including the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro—in its home market of Japan. This move marks the end of the lifecycle for one of the most successful gaming consoles in history, more than a decade after its debut.

The news was quietly announced in a small update on the official PlayStation Japan website just a few days ago, indicating that the decision was made recently. Although most PS4 versions ceased production in early 2021, the PS4 Slim had continued to be offered as a more budget-friendly option. However, the entire PS4 lineup has now officially been discontinued in Japan.

While Sony has yet to issue an official statement, industry observers consider this a logical step, given that the PlayStation 5 (PS5) has been on the market for nearly five years and the period of supporting two console generations simultaneously is coming to an end. Additionally, highly anticipated blockbuster titles like GTA 6 and Death Stranding 2 have been confirmed as PS5 exclusives, significantly reducing the incentive for Sony to keep investing in legacy hardware production. The end of PS4 supply in Japan is likely a sign that the console is gradually being phased out globally.

The PS4 is regarded as a major success, marking Sony’s strong comeback after the challenges of the PS3 era and solidifying its leading position in the gaming industry. It delivered countless unforgettable experiences and iconic titles to millions of players. For the millions of gamers still playing PS4 staples like Fortnite and Call of Duty, Sony is expected to continue providing support through software updates and patches in the near future.

Meanwhile, reports suggest Sony has already started preparing for the next-generation PlayStation 6 (PS6), which is expected to launch in 2028. As such, it’s only natural that the 2013-era hardware steps aside to make way for the future. This event officially closes a glorious chapter in PlayStation history. Although its lifecycle has ended, the PS4 will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of millions of fans.
