Rumored Nintendo Switch 2: leaks, designs, and what we know so far

Leaked design images of the alleged Switch 2 handheld have surfaced, which the company has confirmed will be unveiled this fiscal year.

Although Nintendo has yet to officially announce this system or its specifications, leaks have exposed many details about it. Recently, purported images of the console's design have surfaced, offering gamers a glimpse of Nintendo's upcoming next-generation handheld.

The Switch 2 will be equipped with a new Nvidia ARM-based processor and a graphics chip based on the Ampere GPU architecture, along with 12GB of DDR5-7500 memory and 256GB of integrated UFS 3.1 storage. Compared to its predecessor, the Switch 2 will have a larger 8-inch screen and a kickstand design resembling that of the Switch OLED, extending across the entire rear of the handheld.

The larger size of the Switch 2 may accommodate a bigger battery and cooling system, potentially leading to longer battery life or increased computational power without sacrificing battery life. The next-generation joy-con controllers for the Switch 2 look similar to the previous generation, with an additional button on the right joy-con. It is currently unclear whether the Switch 2 will be compatible with the original Switch's Joy-Con controllers.

The Switch 2 is expected to deliver significantly improved performance, featuring a threefold increase in DRAM capacity and a more powerful SOC. Its use of modern Nvidia graphics technology may also enable the handheld to utilize AI capabilities, potentially including Nvidia's DLSS upscaling technology. Additionally, the system will have more memory than Microsoft's Xbox Series S, albeit with less overall bandwidth.

Nintendo's next-generation Switch handheld is poised to deliver a substantial leap in handheld gaming performance, surpassing the original Switch and presenting an appealing upgrade for Nintendo enthusiasts. That said, it remains to be seen how the system will compare to systems like Valve’s Steam Deck and other PC gaming handhelds.
