Phantom Brigade is a game for those who like turn-based sci-fi strategy games like the XCOM series, and Warhammer 40k: Battlesector. Developed by Brace Yourself Games, Phantom Brigade puts you in control of a squad of mechs fighting against enemy mechs. Who doesn’t love seeing giant robots square off against each other? Check out the Phantom Brigade trailer here:
In the game, you are the leader of a squad of mechs who have been driven from your territory by a superior invading force. However, you manage to lay your hands on a prototype weapon that allows you to see a few seconds into the future, which you think may be all that you need to win each battle. Of course, that sounds a little too good to be true.
The mechanic seems to mimic tactical games like the acclaimed Into the Breach, which is also about giant robots fighting invaders. However, Phantom Brigade sets itself apart by employing a cinematic approach to combat. Each encounter is separated into sections of about a few seconds in length. You can perceive a few seconds into the future to know where an enemy mech will go on the map and what they intend to do. You can then move your squad accordingly to counter them. Then you press play, and the combat unfolds like a slick, action-paced sci-fi movie.
On paper, this sounds like an unbeatable ability. In reality, things may not go according to plan. You can possibly mistime when the enemy will perform their actions or take the wrong position on the map. If your plan goes awry, you will wind up a smoking slab of scrap. Every combat you face still carries some form of unpredictability and risk.
Phantom Brigade is currently out on Early Access for the PC. You can get a Phantom Brigade PC key from our comparator today.
