MODDIY has advised users of RTX 50 series GPUs to utilize their 12V-2×6 power cables rather than the older 12VHPWR cables, as noted on their Help Center website (highlighted by Tom Warren). This suggestion emerged after an RTX 5090 Founders Edition GPU suffered melted power connectors while using one of the company’s 12VHPWR cables.
The company indicated that its new 2025 12V-2×6 and 12VHPWR cables are constructed according to the updated 12V-2×6 specification. MODDIY claims that these new cables offer “notable improvements,” which include “better materials for terminals and connector housings” as well as “thicker wiring.”
MODDIY is now recommending that RTX 50 series owners upgrade to 12V-2X6 cables instead of using existing 12VHPWR cables. Nvidia and PSU manufacturers need to urgently clarify the situation here, as Corsair and others have said existing 12VHPWR cables should work pic.twitter.com/xUjY76GB7A

With the launch of these new cables, MODDIY assures RTX 50 series GPU users an “extra safety buffer.” The recommendation for newer power cables from MODDIY has led to some confusion in the PC building community. The new 12V-2×6 power standard, after all, utilizes the same cable framework as 12V-HPWR; the difference lies solely in the GPU and PSU connectors.
So, what is the reason behind MODDIY promoting its newer cables over the older 12VHPWR ones? The explanation is straightforward: their new cables go beyond the enhancements required by the 12V-2×6 standard. MODDIY’s upgraded 12V-2×6 cables feature thicker wires and superior materials for terminals and housing, providing users with an “enhanced safety buffer.”
Some users might not even notice early indications of melting or overheating in their cards. In the absence of visible damage, a burning smell, or an incorrectly inserted cable, there shouldn't be an urgent cause for concern. If you're using a third-party cable, confirm that it’s compatible, securely connected, and, if feasible, consider opting for official adapters or native PSU cables, as these are currently the safest choice for RTX 4090/5090 cards.
