Nintendo unveils a new turn-based RPG in Mario & Luigi: Brothership.

Nintendo unveils a new turn-based RPG in Mario & Luigi: Brothership.

After nine years without a new title, a new Mario & Luigi game is on its way to the Switch. Dubbed Mario & Luigi: Brothership, the latest chapter of the saga was unveiled during the Nintendo Direct, and the brothers join forces once again in an adventure with remodeled graphics and a cartoonish look.

Set to release on November 7th, the game received a first trailer that only reveals a few details about the plot. In the released footage, we see Mario and Luigi traveling from island to island with the Shipshape Island to navigate the vast world of Concordia, solving puzzles and facing different enemies. Along the way, they encounter various familiar faces and some new characters.

The trailer also showcases a bit more of the gameplay, revealing that the essence of the RPG that the series has brought since the Game Boy Advance era will remain. Several moments show the hero duo springing into action, employing Bros. Moves to overcome obstacles and powerful Bros. Attacks to secure victory in a dynamic turn-based combat twist.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership Will Be Released on November 7th

However, what stands out in the initial images of Mario & Luigi: Brothership is its visual style. As it's the first time the franchise has left handheld consoles, Nintendo has given it a makeover in the art department, adopting a more cartoonish style that works well with the type of humor the story always carries.

The announcement of Mario & Luigi: Brothership was one of the big surprises of the Nintendo Direct because many believed the series would be shelved after the closure of AlphaDream, the studio responsible for the RPG series since the first game was released in 2003 for the Game Boy Advance. The company ceased operations in October 2019 after declaring bankruptcy.

The most recent game in the Mario & Luigi line was Paper Jam, released for the 3DS in 2015. In 2019, the series received the re-release of Bowser's Inside Story, which initially came to the DS and got a new version for the 3D handheld. If there's one thing we've learned, it's that Nintendo is making every effort to bring old-school RPGs to modern consoles, as was the case with Super Mario RPG, a Super Nintendo classic that received a remake for the Switch. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, a GameCube RPG, also made its way to the Nintendo Switch in a newly remade version.
