Madden NFL 25 promises more realism and new technologies

Shortly after the official announcement of Madden NFL 25, Electronic Arts shared several details about the game. Among these is the confirmation that the PC version will maintain feature parity with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and will be accompanied by new technologies that will result in even more realistic gameplay.

Electronic Arts confirmed that the new chapter in the series will feature the latest versions of FieldSENSE technology, introduced in Madden NFL 23 and enhanced in Madden NFL 24, and the new BOOM Tech. The latter employs physics-based tackling to make player interactions more realistic and also affects how an athlete holds the ball.

In a Deep Dive Gameplay video shared by EA, the company details how these new technologies will impact Madden NFL 25. One example shows how physics-based tackling is far more modular and realistic, creating different variations based on factors such as player momentum, impact angle, weight, speed, strength, and player ratings. All these factors influence a player’s response, determining whether they can resist a tackle or will be brought down. Plus, the defender will react automatically to a tackle, and the player will have seconds to respond and evade accordingly.

Player ratings will significantly impact this new technology. A smaller, lighter defender will struggle to stop the ball carrier and may be shoved aside with ease, while a heavier, bulkier defender will take down the ball carrier without needing momentum. EA says the technology emphasizes realism and player creativity.

The Hit Stick, a series staple, has been reloaded for Madden NFL 25. Now, each tackle will have a visual response depending on whether the player’s timing is perfect, too early, or too late. Additionally, an audio cue will indicate a successful tackle, as well as a ball carrier sprawled on the ground and the play interrupted.

Ball carriers will also benefit from the new ball-carrier balance system to level the playing field and ensure improvements are not limited to defenders. The movement of ball carriers will be defined by physics-driven broken tackles and physics-driven stumbles, meaning that after taking a tackle, depending on the impact, momentum, and direction, the carrier can maintain their balance and recover, continuing to carry the ball.

All in all, the new technologies in Madden NFL 25 seem to work together to deliver the highest level of realism when the game launches on August 16, 2024, for PlayStation 4|5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
