Lunar Remastered Collection showcases improvements in this new version

The first and second Lunar games were released on the Sega CD but soon received remakes with new content on the Sega Saturn and PlayStation 1. It is from these remakes that the Lunar Remastered Collection is derived, encompassing Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete. The collection is being produced by GungHo Online Entertainment, which also handled the Grandia HD Collection remaster and is responsible for the Western publishing of Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter.

Recently, PlayStation interviewed Matthias Pergams, a producer at GungHo Online Entertainment America, about what makes Lunar such a special game, the changes coming in the remastered collection, and the games' release in Europe—a region where they had never been officially launched before. There are also details on the Classic Mode, which simulates JRPGs as they were at the time of release, as well as the new voice recording.

Lunar Remastered Collection Announcement Trailer

Lunar: The Silver Star was released in 1992 and was one of the first JRPGs in CD-ROM format. With more storage space, the developers were free to add new features such as voice acting and animated cutscenes, which helped create a cult following of fans who admired the game's efforts. The PlayStation Complete version introduced even more features, which is why it was chosen for the collection.

Regarding quality-of-life improvements, Pergams states that the games have received mechanics such as a battle speed-up option, better inventory management in Lunar 1, and the ability to customize party members' AI behavior for more strategic auto-battles. On the visual side, all graphics have been remastered, along with the UI, animated cutscenes, and in-game effects, and most importantly, the aspect ratio has been adjusted to fit modern TVs. These changes are visible when playing in Remastered Mode. For nostalgic players, Lunar Remastered Collection offers Classic Mode, replicating the original graphics and even featuring a CRT filter.

Regarding the voice acting, GungHo's initial announcement mentioned that Lunar Remastered Collection would feature a new cast of voice actors. However, Pergams clarifies that they tried to find actors whose voices resembled the originals so as not to stray too far from the first experience. Additionally, he confirmed that all vocal songs were performed by the respective characters' voice actors to maintain consistent quality. Finally, Pergams states that the release of Lunar Remastered Collection marks the first time the games will be officially available in Europe.
