Intel launches Core Ultra 'Lunar Lake' chips with gaming, AI, and battery life boost to rival AMD and Qualcomm

Intel launches Core Ultra 'Lunar Lake' chips with gaming, AI, and battery life boost to rival AMD and Qualcomm

Intel has unveiled its Core Ultra 200V Lunar Lake mobile processors, which are now available for pre-order in various slim and light notebooks from manufacturers such as Asus, Dell, LG and MSI. These new CPUs promise 30% improved gaming performance compared to the previous generation, along with up to 20 hours of battery life, surpassing AMD and Qualcomm equivalent laptops in various tasks including gaming.

At the launch event in Berlin this week, demos showcased frame rates exceeding 60fps at maximum settings in games like F1 2024, thanks to Intel's Xe2 graphics, which outperformed Qualcomm's X1E 80-100 by 68% and AMD's HX 370 by 16% in games.

The most notable improvements were in battery life and efficiency. Some scenarios could achieve up to 20 hours of battery life in office tasks due to the new Lunar Lake Core Ultra 200V series processors offering 50% lower power consumption. Intel claims slightly over 20 hours of battery life compared to Qualcomm's similar X1E 80-100.

Intel achieved this by increasing the number of E-cores on its new CPUs compared to the previous Meteor Lake Core Ultra 100 series. The new CPUs now have 8MB side cache and memory on package, resulting in significantly lower power consumption than the previous generation.

The addition of extra efficient Skymont E-cores and doubling the L2 cache allows more tasks to be handled by them instead of the more power-hungry P-cores. This then allows the P-cores to be free to handle demanding tasks such as gaming. In addition to a substantial 30% increase in GPU performance over the previous generation, the Xe2 graphics also has twice the power efficiency. Notably, Intel has removed hyper-threading from its Lunar Lake CPUs in favor of a hybrid core design, providing more efficiency and using significantly less power per thread.

If Intel fulfills its promises, it will solidify its position as the leading laptop chipmaker in a market it currently dominates in terms of market share, and give itself a significant advantage as it enters 2025, where competition from AMD and Qualcomm is expected to be intense.

Fortunately, as the three chipmakers compete to deliver better performance and efficiency, it will benefit end users seeking to upgrade their laptops in 2024 and 2025.
