It says a lot about an indie game that it's getting a visual update four years on, and that's what happened with Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. Developer Ninja Theory recently released an update for the PC that optimizes graphics and provides extra gameplay features—and it looks gorgeous. You can check out the announcement in the following trailer.
According to the update notes:
Just over four years since launch we’re happy to introduce a huge new update to Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. Starting with visuals, we’ve integrated the enhancements we made to the recent Xbox Series X|S release of Hellblade, including updated materials, particles, level of detail and Ray Tracing.
This new build includes Ray Tracing presets (Low, Medium, High), with Ray Traced reflections, plus Ray Traced shadows exclusive to the High preset. We think this brings a new depth to Helheim never seen before, so we’re excited for people to retread Senua’s steps in an even more immersive environment. Hellblade on PC now also supports both DirectX 11 and 12, with support for NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR upscaling for an optimised experience.
There's more to it than ray tracing and better reflections, however. Ninja Theory added some accessibility features, including the ability to fully remap controller and keyboard configurations. You can now alter the size and color of subtitles and adjust the screen colors for players with Deuteranopia, Protanopia, and Tritanopia.
Hellblade is well-known for its inclusivity; the game provides a thoughtful depiction of mental illness by allowing players to empathize with a person experiencing psychosis. The game has certainly inspired a devoted following among players, and given that a sequel's on the way, Hellblade's future is looking bright.
