Hair-raising survival shooter GTFO launched

Not a lot of survival horror FPS can claim to be “hardcore” by design, but 10 Chambers’s new GTFO surely earns that title. Launched last December 10, GTFO is about a squad of four criminals sent on an impossible mission in an abandoned underground base called the Complex, where something has gone horribly wrong. Unfortunately for them, the Complex is full of hideous monsters. And unlike the Suicide Squad, you don’t have special powers—only your weapons, your wits, your teamwork, and your luck. If any of those run out, well, there's a reason it's called GTFO.

Billed as a harder, scarier successor to Left 4 Dead, GTFO is a nerve-wracking experience due to its stressful environments and the mechanics of its enemies. The monsters, called Sleepers, are usually inert and harmless unless awakened by player actions or proximity. Once awakened, they will emit an alarming screech that will wake every Sleeper nearby. What could have been a stealth mission then turns into a shootout with diminishing chances of survival as you get swarmed by Sleepers from every direction. As such, GTFO is part shooter, part stealth game, and part puzzle game.

It doesn’t help that the monsters in GTFO are hard to look at. Mutants that shoot tentacles, split-faced creatures with rows of teeth, hard-to-see shadows, and giant humanoids with bulbous heads—each one is dangerous alone, but as a Horde, they can mean certain death. Thankfully, the new release also includes a checkpoint mechanic for beginners so teams don’t have to restart every time something goes wrong.

As mentioned, players head into the Complex to fulfill any one of a set of objectives: hack a device, obtain an item, start a reactor, or simply survive a defense protocol. With the 1.0 release, 10 Chambers promised to add more Rundowns to the game.
