Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games are seeing a resurgence lately with the release of TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge. Now, we have something different: reportedly, the TMNT comic The Last Ronin will be turned into an action game. And according to Doug Rosen, Senior Vice President of Games and Emerging Media for Paramount Global, it will be a AAA game on the scale of God of War.
TMNT games have been around for a long time, and thanks to their general presentation in cartoons, it’s typically kid-friendly. The Last Ronin is a different beast altogether. Written by Tom Waltz and Andy Kuhn, The Last Ronin is much like the film Logan, it’s set in a dystopian future where Shredder’s forces have prevailed and taken over New York. Only one remains of the four turtles (guess who), and he carries the others’ weapons in a bid to avenge his dead family and end the threat of the Foot Clan for good. A prequel comic titled The Lost Years was released this 2023.
Theoretically, this dark, gritty approach is a solid premise for a single-player action game while still adhering to the more mature version of the Turtles presented in the comics. The player will have access to all the iconic Turtle weapons, including katana, bo staff, nunchaku, and sai, as well as other ninja skills and tools. We’re likely to wander through a wasteland setting and meet a large cast including April O’Neil and her daughter.
There is no release window yet for The Last Ronin and Rosen divulged that it will still be a few years down the road. Thankfully, fans have several TMNT games to tide us over.
There’s the arcade-style beat 'em up TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, and if you prefer some volume, you can get a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection PC key from our comparator.
