Square has released a new trailer for Final Fantasy XVI, titled Ambition. The video details the narrative that permeates the game, its world, and nations and introduces new characters. There are a few glimpses of gameplay, but nothing too different from what has already been shown.
As promised by Naoki Yoshida, producer of the game, the plot of Final Fantasy XVI will be more mature, showing political intrigue and power struggles in an entire fantasy world, different from what was Final Fantasy XV with its contemporary setting. This return to roots also focuses on another recurring element of the series, crystals, which will play an essential role in the plot.
The game takes place in the world of Valisthea, which is in a slow destruction process. Constantly a blight claims more of the land for itself, and only nations under the protection of the Mothercrystals are safe. However, as the light that protects them becomes dimmer and dimmer, they turn on each other in war. The trailer shows nations such as the Grand Duchy of Rosaria, the Holy Empire of Sanbreque, The Republic of Dhalmekia, the Iron Kingdom, and the Kingdom of Waloed, each with its own specific characteristics.
Some kingdoms have Dominants, people who hold the power of Eikons, the well-known summons of Final Fantasy. This new trailer is accompanied by further information on the official website, highlighting two new Dominants. Dion Lesage, Crown prince of the Holy Empire of Sanbreque and Dominant of Bahamut. From the Kingdom of Waloed, we have Barnabas Tharmr, a skilled swordsman who possesses the power of the Eikon Odin. These kingdoms engage in a conflict dubbed the War of the Eikons.
Final Fantasy XVI has a summer 2023 window release, which starts at the end of June and lasts until the end of September.
