Final Fantasy VII Remake was released in 2020, and it was revealed then that it would be just one of three parts comprising the remake of the classic Final Fantasy VII. The first part covered Cloud and his party's journey through Midgar, including the destruction of reactors and the invasion of Shinra, and additional content like an entire chapter dedicated to Avalanche members Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge. To top it off, Final Fantasy VII Remake received a DLC titled Episode Intermission, which tells the story of Yuffie Kisaragi before she joins the group. The PS5 version, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, includes the base game and the DLC.
Many players speculated that after the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Square Enix would follow suit by releasing a new DLC for the game. The bets were on a parallel story exploring the past of Vincent Valentine—a character still not playable in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth—or an entirely new plot. However, the director confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth wouldn't receive a DLC, with the team fully focused on developing the third part of the remake.
But this wasn't the initial plan. During The Game Awards, it was announced that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth would come to PC via both Steam and the Epic Games Store. In an interview on the Epic Games blog, director Naoki Hamaguchi was asked whether the PC version of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth would include features, improvements, or mod support similar to what was offered with Final Fantasy XVI. Hamaguchi said, "We did have the desire to add an episodic story as a new DLC to the PC version." Still, the team ultimately decided the top priority was completing the final game in the trilogy. Although this potential DLC for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth would have debuted on PC, it would likely have been released on consoles later.
Even so, the director mentioned that the idea wasn't entirely shelved. He commented, "However, if we receive strong requests from players after the release regarding certain matters, we would like to consider them." It's unclear whether he was referring specifically to the DLC or something else, as the interview was conducted in Japanese, and we used machine learning to interpret it, leaving room for some nuances to be lost in translation.
