Epic Games buys Psyonix making the future of Rocket League in Steam uncertain

It´s been a busy day for Epic Games since they announced that they had bought Psyonix. An official announcement published yesterday on Rocket League official website made known to the public that the studio that created the game is now part of the Epic Games family.

Epic Games buys Psyonix

That could have been a surprise, but not a real issue, at least until Epic Games' press release on the matter was published. In it you could read the following:

"The PC version of Rocket League will come to the Epic Games store in late 2019. In the meantime, it will continue to be available for purchase on Steam; thereafter it will continue to be supported on Steam for all existing purchasers."

We could say that "in the meantime" was not exactly the best choice of words to announce that, because immediately after it was published many people assumed that Rocket League was going to be removed from Steam at some point. You can imagine the following reaction from everyone that owns the game on Valve's platform, especially considering all the drama that has happened about the way in which Metro Exodus left Steam to become an Epic Games Store exclusive. All this situation has ended with a lot of explanations given on several media, starting with a tweet from Psyonix studio on Rocket League official Twitter account where they clarify that the game is to continue being available on Steam.

Hi all! We wanted to clarify something for you after today’s news: Rocket League is and remains available on Steam. Anyone who owns Rocket League through Steam can still play it and can look forward to continued support. Thanks!

Epic Games has also confirmed later on that Rocket League will continue being sold in Steam and that long-term plans will be announced for the game in the future. That pretty much doesn´t leave out the possibility of the game being moved to Epic Games Store at some point in the future given the "surreptitious war" in which both companies are involved right now, but we are quite sure that they don´t intend to lose the large player base of the popular vehicular soccer game. Only time will reveal what the future of Rocket League is, but we think that if you like it, you should just play it and don´t worry too much about all this.
