The most important ceremony of the year in the world of video games was held last night. The Game Awards 2023 was an exciting event that brought us the Game of the Year, the most desired award among all the categories. This year has been full of great games and the decision has been quite difficult, both when choosing the nominees and the winner. Finally, Baldur's Gate III came up victorious in the competition and the people from Larian Studios with Swen Vincke clad in a shiny breastplate held the award in their hands.
It's not to say that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake 2, Resident Evil 4, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder are not great games, but Baldur's Gate III was the favorite on a majority. Larian Studios' creation won several awards, including Game of the Year, Best Community Support, Best RPG, and Best Multiplayer Game. The game was also chosen as their favourite game of 2023 by the players and got the Players Voice award, and Neil Newbon got the Best Performance award for his role as the now iconic vampire Astarion in Baldur's Gate III.
Securing the GOTY for Baldur's Gate III is quite an important achievement for Larian Studios, but it also comes with a great responsibility. The expectations about whatever game they release in the future are going to be through the roof, and it will receive a hard hit if it does not meet them. A similar thing happened with CD Projekt Red with the botched release of Cyberpunk 2077 after the huge success of The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. Fortunately, the Polish studio has demonstrated that it's possible to recover from that, and Cyberpunk 2077 even got the Best Ongoing Game award yesterday.
It will be very interesting to see how Larian looks at its future. Will Baldur's Gate III finally have an expansion or will the studio focus on something completely different? Until we have answers to those questions, we highly recommend you use our comparator to purchase a Baldur's Gate 3 PC key to enjoy the best game of the year.
