AMD is preparing to revolutionize integrated graphics with its upcoming Radeon 8060S GPU

Details about AMD’s forthcoming “Enthusiast Gaming” Ryzen AI MAX series processors have emerged, previously referred to as “Strix Halo.” This information also discloses the AMD Radeon “8060S,” an integrated graphics solution featuring 40 Compute Units (CUs).

With a maximum of 16 Zen 5 cores and 40 RDNA 3.5 compute units, AMD’s Ryzen AI Max series processors are expected to provide substantial CPU and GPU performance for mobile users. To provide context, this CPU includes more than 2.5 times the number of GPU compute units compared to AMD’s Zen 5/RDNA 3.5 Strix Point processors. Speculation suggests that this chip’s GPU could rival Nvidia’s mobile RTX 4070.

By utilizing a single chip, AMD aims to offer solid CPU performance along with discrete-level GPU capabilities. The Ryzen AI Max series from AMD is well-suited for gaming laptops and workstations, as laptop manufacturers find it simpler to manage the cooling of one chip instead of two separate products. In many ways, these new “Strix Halo” AMD processors are a response to Apple’s M-series of Apple Silicon chips.

In addition to the 8060S iGPU model, there also exists a 32 CU variant called the 8050S. This GPU has an equal number of compute units to AMD’s desktop-grade Radeon RX 7600/7600 XT graphics cards. If AMD can achieve discrete-level GPU performance with these processors, the new Strix Halo-based offerings will be remarkable for PC gamers.

Overall, AMD's lineup for the next couple of years is filled with thrilling releases and plans. It is important to keep in mind that the information from the leaked documents might have inaccuracies—even if sourced from a typically reliable entity and appears credible. What also remains uncertain is the pricing and availability of the products. The official announcements for Strix Halo, Radeon RX 8000 desktop GPUs, and Krackan Point are anticipated to take place at CES 2025, but AMD may have some unexpected developments ahead.
