THQ Nordic will be making a Gothic remake

In December 2019 THQ Nordic launched a playable Gothic remake teaser. It allowed all players who owned the original game or any other game developed by Piranha Bites on Steam to play it for free. The objective of this offer was gauging what kind of reception would have a future full remake of the classic role-playing game, and if it was positive then proceed to develop and launch the full game.

After a couple of months without any news about this matter, THQ Nordic has announced that they consider that Gothic remake will be popular enough and that the development process will continue. Therefore, we will have a full new version of Gothic at some point in the future.

During the trial period, more than 18,000 people have played the teaser and left their opinion about it. According to THQ Nordic the reception has been quite positive and they have selected Barcelona, Spain, as a location for a new studio that will develop the new Gothic.

"The fans are up for a new 'old' Gothic game and the vast majority (read: 94.8 percent) was in favour to develop a remake of the iconic German RPG Gothic, originally released in 2001."

Letting players judge the convenience of releasing a certain game is not something that happens quite often, but we are sure that it provides quite valuable feedback for the developers. Although someone saying that is going to buy a game doesn't really mean that it's happening you can estimate the interest that your project generates and it's definitely cheaper and less risky than developing and releasing a full game to find out that players don't like it.

On a side note, THQ Nordic has just bought Saber Interactive, the studio behind World War Z. Since the development of the Gothic remake is going to take place in Spain there is a possibility that they will be using resources from Saber Interactive to develop the game because they have a regional office in Madrid. That would be great news if we take into account the awesome job that they have done with World War Z and the port of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for Nintendo Switch.

Obviously, no release date for the remake of Gothic has been announced so far but it's been confirmed that the game will be available on PC and next-gen consoles, so it's unlikely that it will happen anytime soon.
