When Epic Games purchased Psyonix last year everyone expected some changes in the popular vehicular soccer videogame that has put the studio on the map. Rocket League has quite a wide fan base and it has been on Steam for quite a while, but things are about to change. The game is leaving its current business model to become free to play this summer, and it also will stop being available on Valve's gaming platform. The later is something that was somewhat expected already by the players but if you are an avid Rocket League player you don't really have to worry about that because you will be able to continue playing it on Steam. The game will not be available for download on Steam for new players once it's released on EGS.
Once Rocket League goes free to play, it will also be available on Epic Games Store on PC. The game version will be the same one to the one found on other platforms but it will feature cross-play between all platforms, including Epic Games Store and Steam. If you own the game previously to this change you will continue to be able to play it with full support on whatever platform it's available to you and you will still be able to update it without any problem. As a bonus, if you play Rocket League between now and the date in which it goes free to play you will get the Legacy status and some extra rewards including:
All Rocket League-branded DLC released before free to play
"Est. 20XX" title that displays the first year you played Rocket League
200+ Common items upgraded to "Legacy" quality
Golden Cosmos Boost
Dieci-Oro Wheels
Huntress Player Banner
Of course, you will also keep all of your inventory and everything you have unlocked in your Rocket League account.
The change will also bring some improvements to Rocket League, including refined main menus, improved Tournaments and Challenges, and a new cross-platform progression for all players.
If you are not an Epic Games Store fan and you want to play Rocket League on Steam you should purchase it as soon as possible to continue playing on Valve's platform once the game goes free to play. Otherwise, we highly recommend that you wait for the change if you have not tried Rocket League yet.
