Namco Bandai and From Software bring us the second title of a franchise that has managed to be worldwide renowned because of its hard difficulty besides other interesting features.
The only connection between the first Dark Souls and this one is that both games are set on the same world of medieval fantasy, so characters won’t be carried over from Dark Souls. As the game protagonist you will be embarked on journey to find a cure for a curse that afflicts you, exploring a fabulous and seamless open world in any way you choose.
You will have to choose one of eight different starting character classes. Each of them leans on different stats of the nine existing.
Stats:
• Vigor – Determines your maximum number of Hit Points. That maximum amount is reduced when you die and then respawn, as much as 50%, but can be recovered using Human Effigies.
• Endurance – Defines your Stamina bar. Once it’s depleted you will be stunned and unable to do anything temporarily and prone to special attacks
• Vitality – Determines the amount of weight you can carry and your encumbrance limit.
• Attunement – Determines the number of spells that can be attuned and grants you a bonus to your spell-casting speed.
• Strenght – Boosts your ability to break enemy guard and your physical attack. Also is required to wear heavy armor and use certain weapons.
• Dexterity – Boosts poison and bleed effects and certain weapons and is needed to wield weapons requiring finesse.
• Adaptability – Boosts your defensive capabilities, your chance to open chests without triggering a trap and your swiftness.
• Intelligence – Boosts your Magic and Fire attack and defense. Required for sorceries and other spells.
• Faith – Required for miracles and other spells. Boosts your Loghtning and Dark attack and defense.
Classes:
• The Warrior, a melee fighter that focus on high Dexterity and Strength and starts with a shield.
• A travelling Knight with Vigor and Adaptability as strong points. Starts without a shield.
• A dual-wielding Swordsman that starts with a scimitar and a longsword.
• The Bandit is all about high dexterity and uses a bow.
• A Cleric with high Faith able to perform a healing miracle.
• A Sorcerer with high Intelligence and Attunement, skilled at ranged combat using the Soul Arrow spell.
• The Explorer, jack-of-all-trades that doesn’t shine in any particular area but that comes equipped with many items.
• The Deprived. Starts as a naked person that fights unarmed and can be developed in whatever way you wish.
As you explore the world you will find bonfires. Those serve as resting places and checkpoints, allowing you to teleport between any two you have visited since the beginning of the game. You will resurrect at the last one you have rested at, and you can also light torches at them to gain a temporary source of light for your exploration in dark areas.
Combat is lively and enemies will release souls once they die. You can collect and use them to level up or purchasing, upgrading and repairing equipment. Once you die you lose all of them, but you can recover them getting back to the bloodstain you left at the moment of your death without dieing again. Otherwise they are permanently lost.
During online games other players can invade your game while you are playing, increasing their Sin level in the process. You can interact with any bloodstains you find and replay the last few seconds of another player’s life before his death. That can help you know what happened to him and how to prevent dieing in the same way.
You will also be able to see other player phantoms.
It is possible to summon other players into your world to help you, (you can be summoned to help too).
Covenants are back into the game and are an important part of the game. They are factions available early on during the game and provide players with new ways of interacting with the world. You make an oath to a specific NPC to join one of them. If you follow their guidelines you will be rewarded and if you break them you will be punished. Some of them like the Knights of the Sun or the Way of The Blue are about cooperative playing, some others like Brotherhood of Blood, Bell Keepers, Company of Champions, Abyss and Blue Sentinels focus on defeating players in PvP.
Dark Souls II is the ultimate action adventure for those that want a real challenge.
