When you get too close to your opponent, your regular attacks automatically change to using knees and elbows to push your opponent back. You have to be careful even immediately after you land a killing blow because it is possible for players (or AI) to kill you at the same time you kill them. Being careful doesn’t mean being passive, if you block too much your opponent might find a way through your defenses, and since it only takes a single hit if it lands in the right place, it might not be the best tactic to block all the time.
