Valorant is a free to play character-based tactical shooter. In a near future, a cataclysmic event occurs, reshaping the world and its governments. Alongside its geopolitical effects, the event also gives certain hypernatural powers to special individuals. That is how Agents and their in-game organization, Valorant, came to be.
The characters are called Agents and each has their own personalities and abilities. Each character has four abilities: one Signature Abilities they get for free every round, two that they have to buy (but they’ll keep over multiple rounds until they’re used up), and one ultimate ability that has to be charged by getting kills.
Similar to Counter-Strike's defuse game mode, there are two teams, one attacking and one defending. The attacking team has a bomb (called the Spike) that they need to plant on one of several different sites. If the attacking team plants the Spike and protects it until it explodes, they win. The defending team has to stop the attackers from detonating the bomb while the match lasts. Each player has one life per round, so if one team’s members are all eliminated, that counts as a win for their opponents. Guns can be bought at the beginning of each round unless you survived the previous one. In that case, your loadout will carry over. There are several types of weapons available in the game, including assault rifles, sniper rifles, shotguns, submachine guns, and light machine guns. Abilities are also bought before each round starts and they are expendable.
The game features a Casual mode and a Ranked mode. No loot boxes will be added to the game, but there are some cosmetic skins for weapons purchasable from the store. The game also includes a battle pass system that will grant players new cosmetic rewards.
